ASR Journal

Journal Entry #14

Assessment today.

Wow I should do a study like “The Effect of ASR on A Student’s Mentality,” ’cause this is making me depressed, and I’m sure I could get a lot of subjects from the 90% of students who dropped. I wonder why. ;)

I phail.
Eff my life.

I’ve been thinking about the Facebook thing, and mentioned it to Lisa.

It’s a good idea, but to conduct outreach of that magnitude to 1000 people to do it, you will get spam blocked.
Facebook only allows you to email 3-5 people that you are not friends with a day. In addition, some people may spam block you for doing so because you are conducting a survey.

:(

Journal Entries #7-10

Last Wednesday, I wasn’t in class because I had an APUSH ‘field trip’ where we listened to a collector of White Plains artifacts.

I did a lot of work for my assessment over the week, such as RHSQing some journal articles and revising my IRB. My IRB has to be revised again to possibly incorporate a new method of surveying people through the social networking site, Facebook.

Journal Entry #6

Revised my IRB.
Was sick before break.
Assessment on 3rd.

Journal Entry #5

After looking through the list posted in my previous entry, I am looking more into Google News, Digg and Reddit, Technorati, Google Blog Search, Blogpulse, and Google Alerts. This would require a lot of daily manual research in googling and tracking blog posts with related search terms.

Journal Entry #4

Since Lisa said that the company didn’t end up investing in any of the social media monitoring tools, such as Radian 6 or Clip Metrics, I Googled free measurement tools, and found this: Online Media Monitoring: 26 Free Social Media Monitoring Tools. Next period, I will research these further to find useful tools for this study.

Journal Entry #3

Last night, I spoke with Lisa on the phone. She corrected my methodologies and suggested ways to back up my data, such as using research from Pew Internet and eMarketer, along with a report that Ian did from Deep Focus about how the Internet can effect a brand, called Engage & Entertain.

She also mentioned that any type of survey through blogs would be unreliable because people who read blogs usually don’t go on and provide truthful information.

Notice the new layout? Yep, so this is brighter so it’s easier to find each journal entry.

Email from me to Lisa:

So my teacher said the next call would actually be in December, before Christmas. Is that okay?

Lisa’s reply:

Yes, I will be in Costa Rica though for part of the month. So, please ask that he call earlier in the month.

And I’m going to CC you in on your communications at her request.

This is my new ASR online journal. Yay! Not.

Today, I emailed my mentor. I don’t know if she would want the contents posted on here. But I did. And you should believe that.

She suggested some other sources of data:

What about using research from our emarketer and pew internet? Or, what about using the Yahoo survey Ian did?

And also wanted you (Mr. Selg) to email her in advance before you call her.
